Setting up your transmitter so it will serve you as a simulator joystick is quite straightforward.

You need a cable to connect your transmitter to your computer. You can either create your own cable or buy one. The cable's transmitter-end varies according to the type of the transmitter. Some transmitters (e.g. JR, Spektrum) require a very cheap cable while other transmitters require a more elaborate one.

Download software:
Download SmartPropoPlus installation package.
If you intend to use a simulator other than FMS, then you should also download PPJoy.

Installation:
SmartPropoPlus can be installed in two flavors –

Generic SmartPropoPlus

SmartPropoPlus for FMS.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each flavor:

Advantages:

- Very simple operation and configuration.
- Tightly coupled with FMS
- Starting FMS starts SmartPropoPlus.
Closing FMS closes SmartPropoPlus
- No need to install nor configure anything else.

Totally generic. Useful for any simulator including FMS.

Disadvantages
|
FMS only. Cannot be used with any other simulator.

- You need to install and configure PPJoy
- You need to start and close SmartPropoPlus manually.

You now have to make your first decision. Follow the instructions carefully. In most cases you will be simulating within 15 minutes from now.
